YOUTH BOARD/EVENTS

The Great Lakes Reined Cow Horse Youth Group was established 5 years ago by active youth in the association.  The goal of the group is to help educate young riders in the cowhorse sport in areas of rules, showmanship, and working cattle.  They have monthly practices and meetings which are held at Tri C/V Performance Horses.  The GLRCHA youth hosts many fundraisers throughout the year.  The money they raise goes to help pay for cattle fees at shows, clinics, and any other events the group votes to take part in.

ANYONE YOUTH CAN TAKE PART!!! There are no dues or fees, and you do not have to be a GLRCHA member!  You don’t even need a horse!  If you just want to learn more about cowhorse, and improve your horsemanship skills this is a great place to learn!  The ONLY requirement is that you participate in the fundraisers as much as possible.  If you don’t raise the money you don’t benefit from it for cattle fees or clinics.

Meetings: The Youth Group meets monthly throughout the winter, and every Thursday night at 6pm the week before a show.  They have a short meeting regarding current fundraising opportunities, and then have a group practice.  At the practices they work on improving their ranch pleasure, reined cow horse patterns, and cow work.  They are coached by the group’s leader, Stephanie Gilliland from Tri C/V Performance Horses.
Fundraising:  The GLRCHA Youth hold fundraisers throughout the year which include food stands, selling bulb kits, pizza, t-shirts, coupon cards, and holding 50/50 raffles.  In the year 2012 they hope to host their fist Bowling Fundraiser, and spring warm up shows.  The money they raise goes to help pay for cattle fees at shows, clinics, and any other events the group votes to take part in.

Giving Back: Every year the GLRCHA Youth Group donates their time one day in the spring to Maple Vista Nursing Home in Imlay City.  Here they weed and rake out their flower beds and plant new ones. They enjoy doing it, and bring their friends & siblings to help as well!  Herbie, the pony is always a big hit too!  This is their way of saying thank you to all of those who have donated money to support them!  In 2011 they also raised enough extra money to send one child to the Little Buckaroos Day Camp.  This child was someone who was horse crazy, but was not able to afford the camp.  The youth sold a saddle that was donated by the Kohler family to cover the cost.

2011 Year in review:  The GLRCHA Youth kicked off the season with a clinic from NRCHA Open Hackamore Champion, Darren Bilyea.  They raised all of the money for this clinic and each showing/riding member participated.  The youth learned a great deal from Darren that day, and have even received coaching from him at shows throughout the season!  The group also raised money by selling, bulbs, discount cards, and t-shirts.  This helped them pay for cattle fees at the first few shows of the season.  All in all a great year with lots of new members in the 12 and under group!  The GLRCHA Youth did a great job weeding the gardens at the retirement home in August! They donated their day and brought a pony for the residence to visit with! This is the 3rd year the youth has volunteered for this!
